APPRAISERS

WHAT IS THE ROLE OF THE APPRAISER?

Our appraisers visit GDL member societies in South Wales to review their plays and musicals. They are given two complimentary tickets for the production they are reviewing: one for themselves, one for a companion.

Upon arrival, they will be given a programme and a copy of the script to view.

After the production, they will complete an appraisal form, giving their views on the production. They will give their scores for each element and each actor, and make nominations in the acting categories.

They submit this appraisal to the moderator. The moderator merges and anonymises all 3 appraisal reports and sends it to the member group.

HOW MANY APPRAISALS WOULD I HAVE TO DO?

There is no minimum or maximum number of appraisals that you are expected to do. If you contribute to one appraisal each year, we are grateful. If you are happy to do more, even better!

DO APPRAISERS GET PAID?

Alas, we do not have the funds to pay our appraisers, or provide travel expenses. We do hope, however, that the complimentary tickets for yourself an a companion will be temptation enough to be part of our wonderful team!

CAN I APPRAISE MY OWN COMPANY?

No. When you enrol as an appraiser, we will ask you to declare any societies you are members of. Many people are now members of more than one society. In order to remain impartial, we will not ask you to appraise a society that you are or have been a member of.

WILL APPRAISERS be trained?

Yes. We hold appraiser training days a few times a year.

You will be invited to attend an in-person session with other new appraisers, or more experienced appraisers who may wish to attend for a refresher.

The session is very interactive and you will learn the process of giving encouraging feedback and constructive critiscism.

WHEN will IT be MY TURN TO APPRAISE?

GDL has an appraisal coordinator. They receive all entry applications from the member groups. They will be in touch (usually via email) to ask if you are available and have a desire to appraise a production. You won't be asked to appraise every one, but will be asked in rotation with the other appraisers.

WILL ANYONE HELP IF I AM UNCERTAIN?

Yes. Our moderators are there for guidance if you have any questions or if you are uncertain about the usual process. All opinion, however, is your own.

HOW DO I SIGN UP TO BE AN APPRAISER?

If you are ready to sign up, we would be delighted to hear from you.

You can complete an enrolment form here.

Once you submit it, you will receive an automated reply so that you know your form has been received.

Please do not worry if you don't hear for many weeks after this.

We will be in touch as soon as the next training date is known.

If you have any queries about becoming an appraiser, please email our appraiser trainer.

Thanks for your interest!
